Baruch Lopes de Leão Laguna
This website aims to portray the work and life of the artist Baruch Lopes de Leão Laguna. The idea is to provide as much visual material of his paintings as possible, to provide insight into the artistic development in his oeuvre. In doing so, this website aims to be a stimulus for art historical research into Baruch and a meeting point for all those who are interested. We want to map the story of his colorful life and tragic end as completely as possible in order to give depth and context to his impressive artistry.
The miserable last period of his life in hiding, the betrayal and the ensuing deportation and murder in Auschwitz have, like so many murdered Jewish artists, deprived him of his rightful place in art history as well as his life. We hope to improve on this in the future with this website.
An artist who has been very productive for sixty years leaves behind an enormous oeuvre, it will not be easy to trace all these works. Especially since a lot of work was commissioned and ended up in private collections. That is why we would like to appeal to all owners of paintings by Baruch to help by sending us photos and information about the works.
We are still at the very beginning of this extensive project, there is still a lot of material to be collected and researched. We start at this stage anyway, because the intention is for the website to become an ever-growing ‘work in progress’, open to valuable additions from all over the world.
Furthermore, we expect that the renewed attention that the exhibition ‘U zult begrijpen dat … De keuzes van Arti et Amicitiae in en na WO2’ (September 2022), may yield interesting new material.
